Sarah Burton Takes Creative Lead at Givenchy
French fashion house Givenchy has officially confirmed that British designer Sarah Burton will be the new artistic director, marking a pivotal shift nearly a year after her departure from Alexander McQueen.
Burton takes over from Matthew Williams, who had been at the helm since 2020. Williams, who founded the label 1017 Alyx 9SM, parted ways with Givenchy in December 2023.
Sarah Burton, a Central Saint Martins alum, is celebrated for her tenure at Alexander McQueen, where she took over as artistic director in 2010 after the brand’s founder passed away. She left the house in October 2023 after nearly three decades.
A Fresh Start for Givenchy
Sarah Burton expressed her excitement, calling Givenchy a «true gem» and highlighting her eagerness to contribute her unique vision. «I’m excited to write the next chapter of this iconic brand and bring my personal touch to it.»
Givenchy’s CEO, Alessandro Valenti, noted that Burton’s appointment is a thrilling milestone for the house. «Her experience and vision have already captivated audiences, and we are confident that Givenchy will continue to innovate under her guidance.»
Sarah Burton’s debut collection for Givenchy is set to be revealed in March 2025 during Paris Fashion Week.
